The right native tree is not the prettiest one or the most famous one. It is the one that fits your space, your soil, and your sun. A tree that is wrong for the site will struggle or outgrow it, however good the species is.
Here is a simple way to choose, organized by how much room you have.
Start With the Site, Not the Species
Before you look at any tree, look at your property:
How much space is there above and below ground?
How much direct sun does the spot get?
How does the soil drain after heavy rain?
What is nearby: a house, a wall, a driveway, or power lines?
Once you know the answers, the list of suitable trees gets much shorter.
What to Check Before
You Plant
Soil: is it compacted, poorly drained, or poor in nutrients? A soil assessment tells you.
Drainage: does water pool after rain?
Sun and wind: does the spot match what the tree needs?
Roots and crown: is there room for both at full size?
Rules: do any permits apply to the species, now or later?
Small Yards
Low-growing natives suit tight spaces:
Kamuning: a small tree or large shrub, 3 to 8 meters tall, with fragrant white flowers. It is widely used as an ornamental hedge.
Pandakaki: a native shrub, about 1 to 4 meters tall, with white flowers shaped like tiny windmills. It tolerates light shade.
Medium Yards
Katmon: endemic to the Philippines, 6 to 15 meters tall, and sun-loving, with large white flowers and glossy leaves. The fruit is edible. It is a popular native for urban landscaping.
Large Lots
Big natives need open space for their crown and roots:
Narra: it can top 30 meters with a wide crown. Keep it well away from buildings and lines, and note that cutting narra needs special DENR approval.
Pili: averages about 20 meters tall and is the nut tree Bicol is known for.
Mistakes to Avoid
Choosing a tree for how it looks as a seedling instead of its mature size
Planting a large tree close to a wall, house, or utility line
Ignoring the soil
Skipping the first-year care a young tree needs
